Headingley Carnage: Robinson and Tongue Rip Through Pakistan as England Take Day 1 Honours

Headingley never fails to serve up pure seam-bowling theater on day one. The skies were overcast, the ball darted around viciously off the deck, and England’s fast bowlers wasted no time putting Pakistan through the wringer. By the time stumps were called, Pakistan had been skittled for just 171, while England raced to 112 for 2, trailing by merely 59 runs.
DailyCricInfo brings you the full match report from an action-packed opening day in Leeds.
Robinson and Tongue Unleash Mayhem
Winning the toss under gloomy Yorkshire skies gave England the perfect opening. They chose to bowl, and boy, did they capitalize.
Ollie Robinson struck with the very first ball of the match, trapping debutant Azan Awais for a golden duck. A few overs later, Pakistan skipper Shan Masood fell cheaply for 5. At 6 for 2, the visitors were staring right down the barrel.
Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq showed tremendous fight. They weathered the storm with a solid 91-run partnership, grinding down the attack. Shafique stroked a composed 61 off 104 balls, while Imam battled hard for his 42.
The truth is, once Josh Tongue found his groove, the wheels completely came off.
Tongue bounced out Imam to trigger an alarming collapse. Robinson returned to castle Saud Shakeel and Shafique in quick succession. Mohammad Rizwan couldn't stem the bleeding either, falling to Tongue for 12. Between Robinson (5 for 51) and Tongue (5 for 46), the duo shared all ten wickets to wrap up Pakistan's innings in just 48.1 overs.
Root and Cox Drive England's Reply
Chasing down a modest total, England walked out with clear attacking intent.
Ben Duckett was trapped lbw by Mohammad Abbas for 15, and Emilio Gay perished for an aggressive 33 off 31 deliveries. But Pakistan's joy was short-lived.
Joe Root looked in total command on his home ground. He played some sublime drives, moving smoothly to 37 not out off 53 balls. Alongside Jordan Cox (23 not out), the pair added an unbeaten 64-run stand to shut down any hopes of a late Pakistani fightback.
Can Pakistan’s bowlers produce early magic on Day 2, or will England bat them completely out of the match?
